A 23-year-old actor was seriously injured during a performance of Broadway musical "Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark" when his right ankle got caught in a hydraulic stage lift on Thursday evening.

NY Daily News reports the actor was about to go on stage at 9 p.m. when he stepped into the wrong position at the back of the Foxwoods Theatre stage.

Following the injury, a black curtain covered the stage from the audience for about ten minutes while emergency responders helped the actor, who was in a lot of pain at the time. Following the ten minute cover-up, the rest of the performace was canceled.

Theater goers described the situation by saying there was all of a sudden a very loud scream or whale of pain from one end of the stage, next thing they knew the black curtain had fallen and they were told the rest of the play wouldn't be performed as a result of the actor's injury.

No one yet knows the name of the actor as it has not been released. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition. According to authorities he will be able to keep his foot, but the extent of the injury beyond that knowledge is currently unknown.

"Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark" has become a bit of a running joke amongst Broadway fans as this is not the first major injury the acrobatic and special effects heavy show has seen. In 2010 Christopher Tierney, 32, was taken to the hospital mid-show when he took a more than 30 foot drop into the orchestra pit after his cable harness snapped. Another actor and dancer suffered broken bones while attempting to do a slingshot flying technique and Natalie Mendoza suffered a concussion during a different performance. The show has repeatedly made headlines and has become known in the theater community not for its play's quality but for its unpredictability during each performance.
