For the past few weeks, citizens of Detroit have spotted a huge animal around town.
Residents of the northeastern portion of the Mich. city described seeing an 85-pound, about four foot tall Doberman roving around the area, WJBK-TV reported.
But this alleged dog is not actually a canine-one expert believes the mystery animal might be a Savannah cat.
The species in question is a mix of an African serval and a domestic house cat, which was first bred in the 1980s.
The exotic cat was reportedly shot and killed, as Paws for the Cause Feral Cat Rescue member Laura Wilhelm-Bruzek told a local news station that she found the animal's carcass in a neighborhood trash can on Monday.
She spent most of Saturday putting traps around the area, in hopes of finding the cat and returning it to its owner.
"What I think is that someone took this breed of cat on and then probably dumped it here," she told WDIV-TV. "They're the wildest version of a domestic cat but they are not wild animals, they have been domesticated."
Bruzek also said that she had successfully found the owner of the cat.
Neighbors who witnessed the exotic animal described it as, "different," and "like an African cat." Some called Animal Control and the Humane Society to help rejoin the cat with its owner, but were reportedly ignored, according to WDIV-TV.
The Michigan Human Society told the Detroit Free Press that they would look into the situation.
For Bruzek, there is a silver lining to the animal's death.
"I'm just glad I found him and he can be at peace now," she stated.
