Conservative activist Ben Shapiro has persuaded at least one semi-famous ally to join him in his boycott of Ritz Crackers over their endorsement of Rev. Al Sharpton; Robert Zimmerman Jr., the brother of the infamous former neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman, according to Raw Story.
A racially sensitive remark by Sharpton from 1994 seems to be the key reason that Shapiro - an editor for Breitbart News - has singled out Ritz for the boycott. In a 1994 speech at Kean College Sharpton used the word "cracker" as a slur; Ritz, arguably the most famous crackers in the world, advertise on the MSNBC program "PoliticsNation" which is hosted by Sharpton, according to Raw Story.
"Sharpton is a racial extortionist who has instigated racial animosities, violence and division in America for the last forty years," a statement from the website Truth Revolt, the organizers of the boycott, read. "In better times, Sharpton would be stigmatized and condemned for the damage he has done. But today he is a primetime host on MSNBC - the charter cable news network for NBC News, and a favored outlet for the Obama administration's spin doctors."
Robert Zimmerman Jr., who has received some notoriety as a conservative activist since his brother George was acquitted in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, supported the ban being led by Shapiro, according to Raw Story.
"There is perhaps no one more undeserving of the title 'Reverend' in the world than Al Sharpton," Zimmerman said. "It is clear to me that inciting and promoting racial discord have proven far too profitable vehicles of wealth for Sharpton to abandon on his own but we can force the hand of his sponsors and send a message that he can't ignore by hurting him where he's bound to feel it - his wallet."
In the past Zimmerman appeared on CNN and said that he believed that Martin had been attempting to grow marijuana and get a gun among other things prior to the encounter with George Zimmerman that led to his death, according to Gawker.
