Vice President Kamala Harris was engaged in a minor automobile accident on Monday, which was immediately dismissed - and incorrectly - as "mechanical malfunction."
Kamala Harris arrived at the White House shortly before 10:30 am. The driver of her SUV had a small overcorrection and clipped a curb, according to Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.
US Vice President's SUV Crashed
According to the Washington Post, the incident was severe enough that the tire needed to be changed, causing the VP's motorcade to come to a halt. Armed guards stood around the trucks halted at the entrance to an underpass while Harris was transported, according to video taken from an overlooking high-rise.
Even though the VP's SUV crashed, the Secret Service first portrayed it as a technical problem, even in an alert to high leadership explaining the motorcade's delay, according to a source.
The vice president's spokesperson, Kirsten Allen, said in a statement that Ms. Harris suffered no injuries and appreciates the swift reaction by her USSS detail to bring her to the White House safely, Independent reported. The vice president was on her way to the White House at the time and was evaluated by physicians once she arrived, who determined Harris was alright.
Secret Service Describes Accident as "Mechanical Failure"
Her car's driver had overcorrected at a tunnel in the Foggy Bottom district of Washington, DC. The first description of the incident as a "mechanical malfunction" was the usual procedure, but the site also reports that new Secret Service Director KimberlySecret Service director Kim Cheatle revealed to allies that she was upset by the inaccuracy of the Harris accident notice. According to an unidentified witness, Cheatle was relieved to learn the whole narrative later that day.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, during a protective movement Monday, a vehicle in a motorcade overcorrected and collided with a curb. The spokesperson stated that the unusual description of a technical failure was only in the first radio communication of the event and that Secret Service commanders were later briefed in the discussion.
A Yeshiva World News reporter tweeted a reported TikTok video of the small mishap on Twitter earlier this week, calling it a weird occurrence. It shows multiple black SUVs stopped at the entrance of a tunnel, with sirens audible in the distance - though it's unclear if they're linked.
While the video is recorded from too far away to make out any specifics, the individual filming is positive that he or she sees the vice president outside of the automobile that has hit the curb.
After the agency was accused of deleting text conversations on January 5 and 6, last year, the Secret Service's protocols and sometimes inexplicable security maneuvers have been thrust into the limelight in recent months. These conversations are being sought in connection with investigations into the 2021 US Capitol disturbance.
Messages that may have been pertinent to numerous investigations into the attack, including the high-profile House select committee examination, were destroyed after the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General sought them in a letter to the appropriate House and Senate committees.
The Secret Service has publicly reacted to the inspector general's assertion that text conversations were destroyed on purpose. It claimed that the message deletion was caused by a routine upgrade that erased virtually all of the phones' existing data. When the texts were sought, the agency stated that the alteration was already in progress, according to Daily Mail.
