Rikers Island Inmate Adds to NYC Jail Death Toll

As said by agency sources and records, Gilberto Garcia ended up having a medical emergency in the Anna M. Kross Center at about noon until being found by city Correction Department staff members. The man was declared gone shortly before 1 p.m. when it took place, reported NY Daily News.

He was detained at Rikers on October 31, 2019, after being arrested for first-degree robbery in Manhattan. Correction Department data indicates that he could have been kept under a state parole warrant. An upcoming court date has been arranged for December 9.

Garcia is the 18th individual to die in a jail or correctional facility this year. A depressing count emerged just after the fatal accidents of 16 people in 2021. The grim tally follows the deaths of 16 people in 2021, noted AMNY.

The cause of death will be ascertained by the city medical examiner assigned to the case to see what the NYC jail did to cause the death of the Rikers Island Inmate.

New York Prison System Needs Revamp

Correction Commissioner Louis Molina expressed his heartfelt condolences to Mr. Garcia's family members and relatives during this challenging time. He added that for every death that takes place in incarceration, the cause and conditions would undergo an initial examination.

The Vera Institute of Justice, a nonprofit that works to improve the criminal justice system and the New York Prison System, criticized the municipality over the inmate's death.

Victor Pate, an ex-Rikers detainee who now co-directs the #HALTsolitary Campaign, added that the current administration has already been given numerous chances to turn things around, but they have only made the whole thing much worse, as individuals keep dying, citing Yahoo.

Furthermore, it isn't getting tough on criminal activity or about enhancing local safety. Concerns seem to be racial prejudice, dehumanization, and deliberate indifference to priceless human life.

On Friday, 1,026 individuals were kept at Rikers pretrial for even more than a year, according to Vera Institute. Eighteen lives were lost in the detention centers in one year, the highest number since 2013, when there were 24. But still, the current inmate population is vastly smaller, approximately half the number back then.

The year before, the prison death toll would include Brandon Rodriguez, 25, who committed suicide in the shower stall on Aug. 10, 2021. His mom, Tamara Carter of Westchester County, discovered the information regarding his death on Facebook.

Carter asked on Monday whether there would be a conclusion to families having to endure this emotional pain before it ends. He criticized Mayor Adams for how it happened but not what he intended to do about it.

Allegedly suing the city and claiming the Correction Department officials we unable to fix the inmates' mental issues. Left him stuck in a filthy intake pen for several days; beaten and locked inside a shower stall.
