An NYC correction officer who a Rikers Island inmate stabbed in a brutal attack lived despite injuries. The Correction Department said that the officer was stabbed several times in the head but miraculously survived.
NYC Correction Officer Survives Ricker Island Stabbing
Inmate Dennis Applewhite, accused of carrying out the assault, is said to have stabbed the 28-year-old officer 15 times in the back of the head at 4:45 p.m. The Anna M. Kross Center stated, reported by New York Daily News.
The injured officer had to be rushed to the Elmhurst Hospital; he was seriously injured but not in immediate danger. He was in the jail's protective custody section, where detainees are in danger of getting attacked by other inmates, ABC7 noted.
Benny Boscio, president of the Corrections Officers' Benevolent Association, suggested that a bill to outlaw solitary confinement be presented to the City Council's floor and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams to prevent fatalities.
As stated by a spokesman, Democrat Mayor Adams went to the hospital Monday evening to visit the officer after becoming aware of the incident.
Hizzoner remarked that these officers in prison take risks every day at work to keep the jail and city safe. Described the savage attack on the officer by the crazed inmate as an example of how difficult the risks are for prison officers.
A remark by Department of Correction Commissioner Louis Molina is that the Rikers Island inmate will also be charged with a new crime, that of attacking an NYC correction officer.

Molina said the violent assault was committed against a dedicated officer who was performing his responsibility and suffering harm, asserting that they will not endure any efforts to harm the jail officers who keep everybody secure, citing the New York Post.
The criminal Applewhite, 29, has been incarcerated since February. He uses the false name Dennis Fredericks and is accused of shooting dead a pregnant girlfriend on November 11, 2021.
He shot the victim, Brittani Duffy, 27, at the neck in the location of Vladeck Houses, Madison St., close to Jackson St.; the Lower East Side said authorities.

Brittani Duffy, who lived in the lower East Side, was killed by ex-con Applewhite after getting shot in the neck, according to NYC authorities.
The 27-year-old woman who was pregnant with the perp's child was sent to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Lower Manhattan. Applewhite and Duffy have a young boy. She died on Thursday.
She was placed on life support to save her from injuries sustained in Applewhite's murderous attack on November 11 and mentions that privy to the case. Initially, the identity of the woman was kept from the public.
Based on details of the deadly assault on the woman, ex-con Dennis Fredericks ran from the crime scene with his gun a bit after 8:45 p.m. when the shooting happened.
First responders found the woman lying on the floor with a bleeding neck wound. Her mother told the EMTs that Fredericks had shot her daughter. He was in jail for domestic violence and had been on parole.
