According to CNBC's latest report, there are many reasons why peanut butter is very popular in the United States. These include the following:

  • Peanut butter spreads are affordable.
  • Peanut butter has a unique taste that attracts buyers.
  • Peanut butter can be eaten alone or used as a spread on sandwiches.
  • Peanut butter can be eaten as a dessert.

Circana, a Chicago-based research company, said that these factors all helped the peanut butter industry reach $2 billion.

Matt Smith, Stifel Financial Corp.'s Equity Research Vice President, said that around 90% of American households are buying peanut butter.

This means that the sandwich spread has a higher household penetration rate than breakfast cereals, granola bars, soup, and other grocery staples.

As of writing, the top three peanut butter brands in the United States are Hormel Foods Corp.'s Skippy, the Post-Holdings' Peter Pan, as well as the J.M. Smucker Co.'s Jif.
