The door Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio infamously clung to at the end of 'Titanic' has sold for $718,750, beating out other impressive film memorabilia at an auction.
James Cameron's historical epic has remained one of the most popular movies ever since its 1997 premiere. 'Titanic' is the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office, behind only 'Avengers: Endgame' and Cameron's 'Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water.'
'Titanic' Door Sold for $718K
During Heritage Auctions' Treasures from Planet Hollywood event, the piece of wood involved in DiCaprio's on-screen death just sold for an astounding $718,750, making it the most expensive transaction of the auction.
According to the auction notes, the door is a doorframe and was not the only 'Titanic' memorabilia sold at the event. The pink and pale purple chiffon dress Winslet wore as Rose during most of the film's harrowing sequences was also sold but only brought in $125,000.
It is understandable that the clothing sold for less because it is, after all, far less contentious than the notorious portion of the shipwreck. Recall that admirers of the film 'Titanic' have debated for decades whether Jack and Rose could fit on the door together rather than freezing to death at the film's end.
As for the rest of the auction, Harrison Ford's bullwhip from 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' placed second at an astounding $525,000 in sales. Similar to the 'Titanic' clothing, Jack Nicholson's ax from 'The Shining' was also put up for sale, but it only brought in $125,000.
During the auction, other well-known movie memorabilia were also auctioned off, such as Tobey Maguire's black outfit from 'Spider-Man 3,' Wayne Knight's can of shaving cream from 'Jurassic Park,' and Bill Murray's bowling ball from 'Kingpin.'
Fans Debate on 'Titanic' Door Scene
This door incident gave rise to a major factual dispute for many years, arguing that Jack could have fit on the door. This truth was tested on the television program MythBusters, a show dedicated to using science and testing to debunk popular myths from the media and cultural zeitgeist.
MythBusters concluded in a 2012 episode that Jack and Rose's sizes would have allowed them to fit on the door.
Despite this debate, Cameron continued to defend 'Titanic' and its last moments. He filmed a series of tests in February 2023 to check if Jack would fit on the door.
These studies also revealed that if Jack and Rose had tried to bring Jack to the door, Jack might have had a chance to survive. The 'Titanic' door's high auction price was likely influenced by the continued public fascination with it, even though the total is still enormous.
However, Cameron revealed that he is strengthening his resolve to have Jack make the ultimate sacrifice because it is more consistent with his character.
