The Louisiana man who fatally shot NFL star Will Smith was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the football player's shocking 2016 slaying.

For the second time, Cardell Hayes was convicted of manslaughter for killing Smith, a former defensive end for the New Orleans Saints, according to the Associated Press.

Hayes, 36, was previously convicted of manslaughter the same year Smith died, but a 10-2 jury vote resulted in the conviction's nullification after the U.S. Supreme Court banned non-unanimous verdicts, the AP reported.

Hayes was tried again and found guilty by a unanimous jury in January.

According to investigators, an April 2016 car crash in New Orleans triggered the deadly shooting. Smith's car collided with Hayes' vehicle, and a chase ensued. Hayes then rammed his car into Smith's, prompting the men to exit their respective vehicles and engage in a confrontation. As Smith walked back to his car, he was shot in the back seven times.

"Mr. Hayes, you ruined my life," Smith's daughter testified. "You took my father away from me."

Smith left behind three children.
