Legendary comedian Bob Newhart has died. He was 94.
Newhart, known for his deadpan humor, died in Los Angeles on Thursday after a series of short illnesses, his publicist Jerry Digney confirmed, according to CNN.
Digney called the late actor's death the "end of an era in comedy."
Perhaps best known for his titular roles in long-running sitcoms The Bob Newhart Show and later on, Newhart, the shows ran on CBS for six and eight seasons, respectively, and viewers regularly saw him on their televisions from 1972 to 1990.
The accountant-turned-actor, who hailed from Chicago, also left fans with an unforgettable performance in the Christmas classic, Elf, starring alongside Vince Vaughn.
He would later go on to portray fan-favorite Arthur Jeffries, otherwise known as Professor Proton, in six episodes of The Big Bang Theory from 2013 to 2018.
The beloved role earned Newhart his first Emmy win in 2013 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, and two more nominations in the same category, after he failed to bring home the coveted statuette several times for past roles since 1962.
He previously nabbed three Grammy Awards in his lifetime for spoken word albums, and in 2002, Newhart was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at The Kennedy Center.
