Hash Oil Cause Of Explosion In Colorado Home

An explosion occurred in in Littleton, Colorado, while a couple produced hash oil with two children in the home, according to The Denver Post.

Authorities say the man was hospitalized after he and his girlfriend caused the explosion, the Post reported. The man's condition has not been released.

According to Mark Techmeyer with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the man was rushed to the hospital but is expected to survive and the investigation is still ongoing, the Post reported. There may be possible arson and child abuse charges depending on what the investigation uncovers.

"They were cooking hash oil. We haven't been able to interview them yet," Techmeyer said, according to the Post.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says an 8-month old child and a 3-year-old child were in the home at the time of Saturday night's explosion and the couple, whose names have not been released, could face charges of child abuse and arson, according to the Post.

The two children have been taken from the home by Child Protection Services and placed with other family members, the Post reported.

The process of making hash oil is dangerous and has caused several similar explosions in Colorado and around the country, the Post reported.

Hash oil is made by using butane to extract the psychoactive chemical THC from marijuana, producing a potent concentrate, according to the Post. Colorado and other states around the country have seen a rash of explosions linked to hash oil production in homes.

"They primarily use butane and it is not a complicated process," Techmeyer said, the Post reported. "It is dangerous. Butane is a heavy gas so fumes drop to the floor, and if you just have a little spark" there can be an explosion.
