Seagate, the Cupertino-based world's largest HDD maker, has unveiled the latest ultrathin hard disk drive designed for lightweight laptops, PCs and tablets promising less weight and high capacity storage at affordable price.
Seagate's latest ultrathin hard disk drive is set to bring about a revolution in the tablet and mobile computing marketing. The ultrathin HDD can be integrated into light-weight mobile computing devices and tablets while offering high capacity storage at affordable prices. The Seagate HDD measures just 5mm in thickness and weighs 3.3oz. To define it in simpler words, the Seagate HDD is "as thin as four stacked credit cards and lighter than a deck of cards."
"When we originally demonstrated this solution last September, we knew we had a truly innovative product that would empower our partners to reimagine mobile applications," Steve Luczo, president, CEO and chairman of Seagate, said in a press release. "The strong support from our OEM partners indicates we have delivered on our vision and look forward to a new wave of innovative solutions enabled by this revolutionary product."
The 2.5-inch Seagate HDD design occupies 25 percent less space than the previously known thinnest Seagate 7mm HDD. The thin and lightweight design of the latest ultrathin HDD promises more accommodation within portable devices making room for additional features such as longer battery life and better ventilation, according to the news release. It replaces the traditional solid state drives (SSD) in laptops, PCs and also tablets.
Seagate has received praise from its OEM partners, including Dell, Lenovo and Asus, for its "revolutionary" invention.
"Dell's heritage is built on empowering our customers to do more with their technology investments with our unbeatable back-end expertise and cost-effective, tailored solutions that empower end-users and IT administrators alike," Kirk Schell, vice president, personal computer product group, Dell, said in a statement. "Our partnership with Seagate on hard disk drive technology enables us to provide our customers with reliable, leading-edge, thin and light ultrabook and laptop designs with long battery life and uncompromised storage capacity."
The new Seagate drive packs 500GB of internal memory to support over 100,000 photos, 125,000 songs or 62 hours of high-definition video. Seagate HDD comes with a standard SATA connector and a 6GB/s SATA interface for fast data transfer rates at an affordable price of $89 each.
