With Ryan Pace in the fold as the team's new general manager, the next step for the Chicago Bears is to fill their head coaching vacancy.
Names like Doug Marrone and Mike Shanahan have been floated as possibilities to take over the top spot in the Windy City, but it seems another name has come to the forefront after yesterday's slate of NFL playoff games.
A report from Adam Schefter of ESPN on Sunday morning states that Gary Kubiak, former head coach of the Houston Texans and current offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, who lost to the New England Patriots yesterday in the first of two playoff games, is now their top selection.
Schefter characterizes their approach as a "major push."
"Bears prepared to make a major push for Ravens OC Gary Kubiak, per source. Kubiak now free to talk with teams about HC vacancies," Schefter tweeted.
Interestingly, a report from NFL.com's Ian Rapoport Saturday said that Kubiak may not be interested in seeking head coaching positions this offseason as he loves working in the Ravens organization and isn't looking to move his family.
The 53-year-old Kubiak was the head coach of the Houston Texans from 2006 to 2013. He built a strong base of talent there and brought the franchise their first winning season, first playoff berth and first playoff victory, but was never able to lead the team to consistent success or a Super Bowl appearance.
Kubiak has no prior history with embattled Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, so if he is hired, it will be interesting to discover what his thinking on working with the veteran signal-caller will be.
Cutler was drafted by Shanahan in Denver, under whom Kubiak spent 11 seasons as offensive coordinator, but Kubiak left to take over the Texans the same year the quarterback entered the league.
