"Suicide Squad" is still missing its leader. It was rumored that Jake Gyllenhaal would replace Tom Hardy in the vacant Rick Flag role but sources told Variety that the "Nightcrawler" actor decided to pass on the offer.

It's not clear why Gyllenhaal didn't accept the gig but the site notes that he's been busy with a few movies slated to be released in 2015 including "Southpaw," "Everest" and "Demolition." The David Ayer superhero film isn't expected to begin production until the spring so there is still time to find a new actor.

Whoever signs on to play Rick Flag, will join an A-list ensemble. Back in December, it was announced that Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney and Jared Leto had signed on. Smith and Leto will play the lead superheroes as Deadshot and the Joker, respectively.

Robbie will be Harley Quinn, Delevingne is Enchantress and Courtney signed on as Captain Boomerang. It's rumored that Viola Davis will play Amanda Waller, the leader of the Suicide Squad, but Davis is still trying to work things out with her shooting schedule for ABC's "How To Get Away With Murder."

It was previously reported that Hardy left the role because of "scheduling conflicts" but a source told Latino Review that he was not happy with the script.

"According to sources, he simply didn't like the script he was finally given, he didn't like the drastic change to the character," Latino Review wrote.

Supposedly the script will focus mainly on Smith's Deadshot and Leto's Joker. Despite the vacant role of Rick Flag, "Suicide Squad" is still expected to be released Aug. 5, 2016.
