Ryan Keith Bolinger, a 28-year-old white male, was fatally shot by a police officer after exhibiting strange behavior Tuesday night in Des Moine, Iowa.
The incident began when Bolinger pulled up his Lincoln sedan extremely close to a police patrol car. He parked so close that the officer inside could not even open the driver's side door, according to MSN News.
Bolinger then got out of his vehicle and began "dancing in the street or making unusual movements in the street," said police sergeant Jason Halifax, reported the Guardian.
After the unusual display in the street, Bolinger then got back in his car and led the police on a low-speed chase, going just about 35 miles per hour. Officer Vanessa Miller, a seven-year veteran of the force, and Ian Lawler, the policeman who Bolinger boxed in previously, began pursuit from separate patrol cars, according to MSN News.
Bolinger was eventually stopped by the police as he was attempting a U-turn. However, instead of surrendering, he got out of his Lincoln and rushed towards Miller's vehicle.
It was at this moment that Miller fired a single shot, through her rolled up window, shattering the glass and hitting Bolinger in the torso. He was brought to a local hospital, but later died from the gunshot wound, according to the Guardian.
Halifax believes that Miller fired the shot for a specific reason. However, he refused to elaborate on what the reason may be.
"She obviously felt something, and it involved what she was perceiving at the time, but that will be up to the grand jury to hear next," he said.
An investigation into the incident is now pending, including a toxicology report.
