Dale Earnhardt Jr. waited six years, but he finally asked his girlfriend Amy Reimann to marry him.

The proposal took place in Germany where the newly engaged couple is traveling. Earnhardt is exploring his family roots in the country they emigrated from in 1744. Reimann displayed her engagement ring in a photo of her and Earnhardt standing in an old Lutheran church that his ancestors once attended.

"I'm completely overwhelmed with love & joy. Happiest girl in the world! I love you so much @DaleJr," she tweeted.

The 40-year-old Earnhardt quoted the tweet saying, "Looking to the rest of my life with this amazing girl."

They traveled with the NASCAR driver's sister Kelley Earnhardt and her husband L. W. Miller as well as JR Motorsports IT manager Martin Friedrich, who is a German native, according to USA Today. Kelly also offered her congratulations to her little brother and his fiancée.

"Adding another sis-in-law to the family! Happy for my brother and his future bride! Herzlichen Glückwunsch!" she tweeted. The last two words are a German phrase meaning "congratulations."

Earnhardt and Reimann started dating in 2009 and fans have been pestering their favorite racer about popping the question for a long time.

"The people we interact with on Twitter are, 'When are you going to do it? Pop the question already," he said in February at a NASCAR Media Day. "She gets it more than I do: People telling her all the time I need to put a ring on it. When I turned 40, it really amped up. People are like, 'Man, your time is running out. Amy is a good girl, what are you waiting for?'"

The 12-time Most Popular NASCAR Driver may have hesitated due to his fear of jewelry. He finds the decorative accessories "creepy," and doesn't like people wearing it around him, but he's making an exception for his future wife.

"We've talked about it," Earnhardt said in February. "I'm not going to be held accountable [to wear a ring] and she can do whatever she wants. I figure if we ever get to that step in life, I owe her that much. I'll have to put up with [her wearing a ring]. But I'm free of all my obligations in that regard."

The couple and their family will continue their journey through Europe visiting other churches and buildings where his ancestors may have frequented.
