It seems the New York Giants' reported interest in acquiring Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor is accurate. But it also seems the possibility of the G-men actually pulling off a trade for the best strong safety in the NFL is beyond remote. According to a report from Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, a team source indicates that the Giants did, in fact, reach out to the Seahawks to express interest in potentially talking trade for Chancellor, but that other sources around the league are indicating that the Seahawks either won't trade Chancellor or will ask for a package of picks and players in return that is "prohibitively high."

Per Vacchiano, while it's unclear what the response was from the Seahawks during the Giants trade call, a team source indicated the call was "mostly to express an interest and gauge the situation and perhaps the price."

Chancellor, a three-time Pro Bowler who is still just 27, has vowed to stay away from the team Seahawks until his current deal is addressed. While it's very lucrative deal - four years, $28 million - and at the time of its signing in 2012 marked a new record for a strong safety in the NFL, Chancellor watched this season as Seattle handed out new deals to quarterback Russell Wilson, running back Marshawn Lynch and linebacker Bobby Wagner. Other key defensive players, safety Earl Thomas and cornerback Richard Sherman, have already had their deals reworked to provide big guarantees by Seahawks GM John Schneider.

For the Giants, the safety position has been nearly decimated already this offseason with just a week left before the beginning of the 2015 regular season. Rookie second-round pick Landon Collins is a player the team traded up in this past April's draft to nab and someone they'll look to rely on right from the get-go. Collins, however, has dealt with a sprained MCL and is still acclimating to defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's scheme and the NFL game. The team recently signed former Giant Stevie Brown to provide a veteran presence behind Collins.

At strong safety the Giants seems to have nine-year vet Brandon Meriweather at the top of their depth chart, with mammoth Cooper Taylor manning the No. 2 spot. Meriweather remains talented, but he's a liability in coverage at this point in his career and has dealt with both injury and inconsistency issues over the past few seasons - he's appeared in 11, 1, 13 and 10 games over the past four seasons.

Unfortunately, while the Giants have indeed reached out to the Seahawks and have a significant need at the position it seems, per Vacchiano, that they're among a number of times to call the Seahawks and express interest in a deal for Chancellor.
