Five people were stabbed on the U.C. Merced campus in Merced County, Calif., Wednesday morning, and the suspect was shot and killed during a confrontation with police, university officials said.

The incident occurred in the campus' Classroom and Office Building, according to The Fresno Bee.

Officials issued an alert on Twitter shortly after 8 a.m. warning students to stay away from the campus due to a lockdown.

"Campus is locked down. Do not come to campus. If you're on campus, stay where you are," U.C. Merced tweeted at about 8:50 a.m., according to NBC's Sacramento affiliate KCRA-TV.

The attacker was identified as a male student in his 20s who injured at least five people during the attack.

Two people were sent to a hospital via helicopter while the remaining three were treated on campus. All are reported to be conscious, and no fatalities have been reported.

The campus is closed, and California Highway Patrol is diverting traffic around campus on Lake Road and Bellevue Road, according to ABC's Fresno affiliate KFSN-TV.

Authorities are currently searching the campus to see if they can find any more victims.

The motive for the stabbing, or any possible connection between the victims and the assailant, are unknown.
