Two of Netflix's biggest comedies, "Orange is the New Black" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," collided Thursday when Netflix released a video of the ladies of Litchfield prison singing a parody "Peeno Nior." While wine is hard to come by in prison, the "OITNB" cast instead sang about their jailhouse hooch, which is referred to as "Honey Jay" in the video.
The "Peeno Noir" song, which was sung by Tituss Burgess' character Titus Andromedon, was one of the most talked about moments from the stellar first season of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," which was created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.
"Honey Jar: A Tribute To Peeno Noir" video is used as a catch up vessel before the fourth season of the show premieres this summer and reminds fans about all the events from season three. Actresses Uzo Aduba, Laura Prepon, Laverne Cox, Taryn Manning, Kate Mulgrew, Danielle Brooks, Dascha Polanco, Samira Wiley, Lea Delaria, Catherine Curtin, Jackie Cruz, Selenis Levya and Yael Stone all star in the video and uses the same beat as "Peeno Noir," but with a prison twist. The ladies also changed the lyrics of the song that matched the story lines of the characters in the video.
In the video, the actors sing as their characters, including how Alex wound up in jail, Red's chicken obsession, Black Cindy's recent conversion to Judaism and Piper's used panty-selling business.
The "Peeno Nior" song came in the sixth episode of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" in an episode where Titus is trying to achieve his goals of being a musical star. To achieve these goals, he makes a music video that is an ode to the black male penis. The song was such a big hit, Burgess even got his own brand of Pinot Nior!
"When we started to shoot this thing, we didn't really have a track. We didn't really have a song. All we did was play a beat back at Tituss, and as we shot him he would just do these lines," Jeff Richmond, the show's composer, said of the "Peeno Nior" number. "We had all these video elements, but it wasn't a song yet. It wasn't a song until we got in the edit room and we wrestled it together."
"Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" returns to Netflix on April 15 for its second season, while season four of "Orange Is The New Black" debuts on June 17.
