Twitter is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to edit tweets after sharing them on the social network. The catch is that the option will appear for a limited time and users can make minor typo corrections, only once.

Twitter has proven to be the favorite place for users who like to share their thoughts precisely or strike real-time conversations about any particular topic or an event. The social network has a lot going on in its back-end creative labs. But any feature that goes live has to go through a beta phase, which eventually discloses the company's future plans. According to a latest report by The Desk's Matthew Keys, Twitter sources reveal that the company is working on an "edit tweet" feature "for months" on top priority basis.

The author of the tech blog also revealed details on how the feature will work if it goes live. A user can edit a tweet within a limited period, which is currently under review. Users will also be limited to making "slight" changes to the tweet, like typo corrections or adding one or two words. After editing and publishing the tweet, the feature will not allow any further edits.

"Twitter wants to enable users to immediately debunk incorrect information, especially erroneous tweets that go viral," Keys wrote in his post, Monday. "However, Twitter wants users to be able to edit a tweet without changing the overall purpose - in other words, Twitter doesn't want a user to post a news story, accumulate a large amount of re-tweets, and then change the tweet to display a promotion or advertisement."

It is still uncertain that the feature will go live anytime soon, but since Twitter is always experimenting with different features all the time it is safe to assume that the "edit tweet" will be integrated into the service after successfully passing all tests.
