The best man in a couple's wedding was arrested on Monday after attacking and stabbing a couple in their North Carolina home; the wife later succumbed to her injuries Wednesday.
The suspect, 31-year-old Jonathan Broyhill, fatally stabbed Jamie Kirk Hahn, 29, and injured her husband, Nation Hahn, 27, at their home in Raleigh, North Carolina. Broyhill tried to take his own life after the attack but failed. He's in police custody, and is being treated for his injuries.
Broyhill, who served as the best man in the couple's 2009 wedding, was arrested and initially charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. After Hahn's death, he was charged with murder.
The three were close friends. The Charlotte Observer reports their Facebook pages contain multiple photographs of them together at a variety of social places. The trio of friends usually hung out together on Monday nights for dinner, friends say.
Sources suggest that the attack was over missing money from a former Congressman's political campaign, according to the Examiner.
Jamie served as a political strategist at her firm Sky Blue Strategies, where Broyhill also worked as an accountant. Former U.S. Congressman Brad Miller hired Sky Blue Strategies in 2010 to assist in his fundraising efforts.
It appears money went missing from the Congressman's campaign. The Federal Elections Commission sent Miller a letter in the fall stating that several of his political donors never received refunds, Miller told ABC.
As an accountant, Broyhill was the main person with access to the fundraising software.
"It's probably the case that Jamie was asking questions on behalf of the campaign about campaign finances," Miller said on Wednesday. "I think it's bound to be part of the investigation of Jon's motive."
