A 30 year-old man opened fire at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, where two of its staffers were killed on Saturday. Authorities said the alleged shooter had been apprehended.
The Methodist Health System, the hospital's parent company, reports that a responding officer shot and injured the suspect.
The suspect, identified as Nestor Hernandez, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, according to NBC News.
According to the Dallas Police Department, Hernandez was on parole for robbery and was wearing an "active ankle monitor."
Hernandez may have hired a lawyer, but that remained unclear. Despite repeated attempts to reach out, the county defense attorney remained silent on the Dallas shooting as of present reporting.
Nobody knew if the suspect knew any of the victims or what may have triggered the violence. The victims have not been named, and we don't know what they did for a living.
In a statement, the Methodist Health System expressed that it is "grieved" by the demise of two cherished team members and called the incident an "unimaginable tragedy."
Police Chief Eddie Garcia of Dallas referred to the incident as "an appalling" failure of our criminal justice system."
Suspect Was Imprisoned For Aggravated Robbery
Amanda Hernandez, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, confirmed that Nestor Hernandez was permitted to be present at Methodist Dallas Medical Center to be with his "significant other" while giving birth on Saturday.
She revealed that the suspect had served time in jail for aggravated robbery and had been paroled in October of last year, but she did not elaborate on the situation surrounding the incident of US gun violence, AP News reported.
Hospital authorities confirmed that Hernandez, had been transferred to another facility for treatment.
The suspect was apprehended, stabilized, and transferred to another local hospital, according to a statement from Methodist Health System.
A Moment of Terror
At the time of the Dallas shooting, hundreds of breast cancer survivors and their families were touring a newly refurbished breast center in a different building on the hospital's campus, the Oak Cliff Adovocate reported.
Shots were heard in the hospital's maternity ward, according to witnesses interviewed by NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.
Amanda Birdwell stated that she and her loved ones took refuge in the hospital's cafeteria kitchen.
She said that her sister suffered a "panic attack" during the shooting incident.
Amanda Hernandez stated that the Office of the Inspector General for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is assisting local law enforcement with their investigation into the shooting.
On Sunday, neither the Dallas police nor a hospital spokesperson would comment further on the Dallas shooting.
It comes after a US gun violence in a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in June that left four people dead, and one in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September that resulted in the death of a visitor.
