Police in Perry, Iowa, northwest of Des Moines, told reporters that there was an active shooting incident on Thursday, January 4 at the city's high school.
A woman who answered the Perry Police Department phone confirmed to the Associated Press that the shooting at Perry High School is currently being described as active but did not provide any further information.
NBC News reported that several victims have been transported to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. The number of victims and their conditions are currently unknown.
The high school is part of the Perry Community School District, and that Thursday was the first day back in school for students following the December holiday break.
Phone messages left by reporters with the Perry School Board's president and vice president, as well as an email message left with Superintendent Clark Wicks, were not immediately returned.
Local media reported that police vehicles from multiple police departments have arrived at the scene to assist local officers in the shooting situation.
