A man with a gun making threats in Yellowstone National Park was killed in a gun battle with park rangers.

It happened in the early morning hours of July 4 in Canyon Village.

The park service says that when rangers went to confront the man there was an exchange of gunfire.

The man, who was not identified, was killed in the incident.

One Yellowstone law enforcement park ranger was injured. They were listed in stable condition at a nearby regional hospital.

An area around the Canyon Lodge complex remained closed for the investigation.

The FBI is leading the investigation with support from National Park Service special agents.

Authorities say there were no active threats to the public.

The incident remains under investigation and additional information was available.
