Russia scrambled fighter jets to prevent U.S. bombers from crossing its border over the the Berent Sea in the Arctic, the Kremlin said in a statement posted on social media Sunday.

Russian MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighter jets identified two U.S. Air Force B-52H heavy bombers nearing the border, according to the statement.

"As the Russian fighters approached, the American strategic bombers corrected their flight course, moving away, and then turning away from Russia's state border," said the message issued by Russia's Defense Ministry, Radio Free Europe reported.

The report hasn't yet been confirmation by the U.S.

The U.S. military routinely carries out flights over international waters in the area in neutral airspace, noted Radio Free Europe

But Moscow has responded to the patrols more aggressively in recent months. It warned last month that American drone flights over the Black Sea risked triggering a "direct" military clash.
