Google's email app for Android has received a major update adding new features such as "save to drive," improved right-to-left support, spam explanations and more.

Less than a week after Gmail for Android became the first app to surpass 1 billion installs since launch, Google has rolled out a significant update to bring a slew of features to the app. The latest update pushed to the email client on Android devices includes features such as saving attachments directly to Google Drive, improved side navigation menu, enhanced right-to-left support and finally explaining the spam content in an email.

Gmail for Android is now bumped up to version 4.8 as it enjoys more than 1 billion installs on Google Play. The official announcement was made on Gmail's Google+ page, Monday, detailing the changelog that will be pushed to all users over the course of next few days.

First off, the update adds "Save To Drive" function, which appears when a user taps on the attachment sent via email. Users can directly save the document to Google Drive and can be accessed from phone, tablet or PC. This saves valuable space on the device so it can be used for other purposes. The update also adds a new box, which only appears on spam emails. The web giant will explain why the email has been marked as spam.

Finally, the new update brings quick access to accounts, labels, settings, Help and Feedback by swiping from the left edge for English users and right edge for RTL languages. These features mark a significant change for users of Gmail app on Android devices and will be rolled out to all users in the nextt few days.

The updated Gmail app is already available for download from Google Play Store.
