Tiger Woods announced on Wednesday he would miss the 2014 U.S. Open as he continues to recover from back surgery. Woods, who's on an indefinite leave of absence, hopes to return this year.

Woods will miss his second straight major championship due to his continuing recovery from the back surgery he underwent on March 31 to alleviate a pinched nerve, according to his official website.

"Unfortunately, I won't be there because I'm not yet physically able to play competitive Golf," Woods said Wednesday in a statement released on his website. "I'd like to convey my regrets to the USGA leadership, the volunteers and the fans that I won't be at Pinehurt. The U.S. Open is very important to me and I know it's going to be a great week.

"Despite missing the first two majors, and several other important tournaments, I remain very optimistic about this year and my future."

Woods last played on March 9 at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. His back injury will cause him to miss his sixth career major -- he missed two in 2008 following knee surgery and two in 2011 because of a knee and an Achilles injury, according to ESPN.

Woods told reporters last week that there's no timetable for his return.

"There's no date, there's no timetable, just taking it day by day and just focusing on trying to get stronger and come back," Woods said at Congressional Country Club on May 19, via ESPN. "I want to play today, but that's just not going to happen. So just taking it step by step."
