Social-sharing app "Path" has unbundled its core messaging feature into a separate app that offers several new and popular features.
Path, the social-sharing app, is doing what Facebook did with Messenger and Foursqaure with Swarm. In other words, the photo-focused social networking company is splitting its popular messaging feature into a separate app, called "Talk." It seems like a trend in the tech industry to unbundle the popular features into standalone apps to gain more traction in the market. And for Path, which has been through some rough patches this year with major layoffs, the unbundling strategy should help the company gain some foothold in the competitive market.
Path announced the new app for both Android and iOS in a blog post, Friday. The move comes the same day as it acquired TalkTo, a pioneer in messaging field. The company authority spoke about the Talk's launch in its post, welcoming the TalkTo team that has expertise in making communications easier without placing an actual call. The company added that the TalkTo service will be completely integrated in its new Path Talk app, later this summer. The new mobile messaging app comes with a slew of new features including Ambient Status, Quick Replies, voice messaging, ephemeral messages and more. Company sources also revealed that it is lifting the 150-friend limit in the new Path Talk app, which means users can have unlimited friends in their list. "With this update we're lifting the 150 friend limit to give you the freedom to decide who and how many are in your network," Path describes the new Talk app in a blog. "We've been testing this change with some passionate users for months and have found that, while most people still want to connect with just 50 friends, others may choose to add 500 (and use Inner Circle to share moments with just their closest of friends). We're putting the controls in your hands." The Ambient Status allows users to share messages that are automatically erased from the servers 24 hours after users send them. The quick replies come in handy to those in a hurry and still acknowledge messages with a swipe using Talk's message list. The app also features basic functions such as sharing texts, photos, voice notes, maps, music, movies, videos and colorful stickers. The Talk app is available for download for both Android and iOS here.
