"Doctor Who" returns for its eighth season with dryer wit, less flirtation and a few more wrinkles. Peter Capaldi will take the lead as the twelfth Doctor, but first, he's taking a trip around the world.
The BBC series will host a 12-day promotional tour across five continents. The tour kicked off on Aug. 7 in Cardiff, England where the show has filmed since its 2005 reincarnation. It would move on to London later that day. The international leg of the tour starts in Seoul on Aug. 9, followed by Sydney (Aug. 12), New York City (Aug. 14), Mexico City (unconfirmed) and finishes in Rio de Janeiro (Aug. 18).
Showrunner Steven Moffat and Capaldi's co-star Jenna Coleman would join him on the tour. Coleman, who plays Clara, co-starred with the previous Doctor Who played by Matt Smith. At the premiere screening in Cardiff, Coleman told the audience she was "as open to change as I could possibly be to allow Peter to take it whatever direction he wanted, and what he's done is very brave and bold."
Fans attending the tour will have the chance to view the season premiere, entitled "Deep Breath." The episode takes place in 19th century London and runs 75 minutes, the longest season opener since Doctor Who returned in 2005.
Those not fortunate enough to obtain tickets can view a live stream feed on YouTube from the events in Seoul, Sydney, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro, according to Digital Spy. The stop in New York won't be available through live stream, but it will be posted to YouTube later.
"This 'Doctor Who' global tour isn't just about the lucky few that manage to get tickets for the events, it's about connecting with fans all over the world, wherever they are," said Amanda Hill, chief brands officer for BBC Worldwide.
"Doctor Who" premieres on BBC One and BBC America on Aug. 23. A midnight screening of the premiere will happen the same night at select U.S. theaters and will feature "additional content."
