A student from the University of Alabama was kicked out of the Chi Omega sorority after she sent a Snapchat with racially offensive language.
The picture features three Caucasian girls seemingly celebrating the fact that the sorority did not pledge any black girls last weekend on bid day.
The Chi Omega sorority and the University of Alabama investigated after a screenshot of the Snapchat circulated on social media, reports WSFA.
The woman who sent the picture was removed from the chapter. The statement she made was also false - there were two black women who pledged the sorority on bid day, reports The Crimson White.
"What was expressed is absolutely reprehensible and completely inconsistent with Chi Omega's values and policies," Whitney Plumpton, a spokesperson for Chi Omega's national headquarters, wrote on the Chi Omega Facebook page. "Chi Omega took swift disciplinary action in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures. The woman who took the photo is no longer a member of the chapter."
Students at the university seemed shocked in interviews with WSFA.
"I got an email this morning about how awful and dumb and stupid it is," Paige Riggs told the local TV station. "I'm glad they're in trouble."
The university responded to the incident by sending out an email to students explaining it is investigating the behavior of the former sorority member.
"We are all extremely disappointed when any student uses language that is disrespectful or offensive to any segment of the UA community," University of Alabama President Judy Bonner said in a statement. "We are especially sad that this incident occurred on a day that was an exciting and happy one for the young women who participated in fall recruitment."
