NFL Rumors: Cleveland Browns Waiting on Brian Hoyer Extension

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer has led the team to an AFC North-leading 6-3 record. But will Hoyer be leading the team next season? The six-year veteran is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, and the Browns did invest a first-round pick on Johnny Manziel in this year's draft.

Right now, Cleveland seems content to wait on negotiating an extension with Hoyer.

"Brian Hoyer's agent, Joe Linta, told me Sunday he hasn't had any discussions about a new contract for the 2015 free-agent-to-be since May. Six months," wrote Peter King of TheMMQB.com. "Hoyer is the most desirable veteran quarterback among a weak crop.

"There is time for Hoyer to fall to earth, of course, but I'll be amazed if the Browns, seeking a long-term answer at quarterback since forever, let him walk."

The 2015 free agent quarterbacks are largely uninspiring. Jake Locker, Michael Vick, Christian Ponder, Mark Sanchez and Ryan Mallett are the major names of the group, and none of them project as long-term answers at the position.

Browns general manager Ray Farmer said recently that Manziel was the starter of the future for the Browns. However, some have speculated that Hoyer will not re-sign with Cleveland with Manziel still on the roster. Should Hoyer and the Browns continue to win and make the playoffs, it will be much more difficult for the team to move on to Manziel after the season.

Hoyer is completing 58.5 percent of his passes this year and has thrown for 2,212 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. His passer rating of 90.4 ranks 17th in the NFL.
