A Homeless man stole an ambulance outside a Michigan hospital Sunday night in an attempt to drive to a strip club in Detroit, police told The Oakland Press.

The ambulance had just delivered a patient to the hospital in Pontiac and was parked outside when the suspect, apparently overcome with an urge to visit a strip joint, hopped in and drove off. Police were sent to the hospital after receiving reports of the theft at around 11 p.m.

The unidentified man made it over 20 miles towards his destination before he was arrested when police caught up with him in Sterling Heights. Authorities were able to track the alleged carjacker down using a cellphone that was inside the unlocked ambulance when it was taken, The Oakland Press reported.

Police said the man, who they believe suffers from mental health issues, was cooperative.

"He told the deputy he was hoping to go to the Booby Trap to see some pole dancing," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told the newspaper. "You can't make this up."

The ambulance was handed back to STAR EMS. As for its unexpected driver, he apparently took the ambulance because he had no other means of transportation to the Booby Trap.

"Apparently he said there was no public transportation available," Bouchard told the newspaper.

"Again, you can't make this up."
