Things seem to be on the verge of exploding in Edmonton.
The Oilers (6-15-5) continue to lose in spectacular fashion and so reports continue to surface that changes are on the horizon for the once-proud franchise.
The latest says that a major overhaul of the roster is being considered and, at this point, may even be expected, according to TheFourthPeriod.com.
Oilers GM Craig MacTavish has been exploring the trade market for several weeks and the sense of urgency in completing an impact trade is rising.
Edmonton would like to add a top-two center, a bottom-six forward with a strong two-way game and a new starting goaltender.
They're also considering multiple changes to their defensive corps.
The Oilers have been shopping the likes of Jordan Eberle, David Perron, Nail Yakupov, Jeff Petry, Justin Schultz and Teddy Purcell in an attempt to reshape the roster.
While head coach Dallas Eakins has also been reported to be on the chopping block and MacTavish himself could also come under scrutiny, it sounds like the moves the organization are interested in making are geared towards reconfiguring the lineup.
TSN Insider Darren Dreger, in a series of tweets, offered his assumption that the next 48 to 72 hours will determine the future of the beleaguered franchise.
"I suspect the next few days will determine direction Oilers will go. Full forensic analysis from top to bottom will take place," he wrote.
"A culture change is required, but does firing coach and gm do that? Not if the team is fundamentally flawed. Tough decisions for Oil brass."
The Oilers have apparently made some players off-limits, but that hasn't stopped other teams from inquiring about them.
Multiple league sources confirmed to TFP that teams have also inquired about Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but neither player is expected to be moved.
