A teenage girl in Florida is recovering after being attacked by a bear on Sunday, ABC News reported.

Leah Reeder's back, neck, face and legs suffered injuries, according to her mother Sherry Mann.

"Even as I sit here now, I can't believe it happened," Mann said. "The bears are all over the place, and I know how hard I would fight to protect my kids, but a momma bear can do so much more damage than me with just one swipe."

The 15-year-old was attacked as the sun was going down in Franklin County in the panhandle of Florida. The animal attacked and dragged the girl into a ditch while she was walking her dog. Once Reeder "played dead," the bear left, her mother said. She was able to walk a block to her father's house for help.

"The worst injuries are to her face," Mann told My Pan Handle. "She has a huge laceration on top of her head and one across her forehead and deep, deep puncture wounds to the side of her head."

Reeder underwent surgery around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

"She managed to crack a few smiles at me before she went in for surgery," said Mann.
