Human body parts were found in a suspicious package after police authorities were alerted to an abandoned roller-type suitcase near San Francisco's Twitter headquarters on Wednesday afternoon.

The discarded luggage had been stuffed with human remains on a San Francisco street a block away from the social media giant's offices, San Francisco Mercury News reported. The body was determined by the San Francisco medical examiner's office to have been dismembered, but it remained unclear whether the remains were male or female, or even whether the remains were those of multiple victims or just one.

"Investigators are still searching to determine if there are any other body parts in the area," a police spokeswoman said. "This was an extremely gruesome crime scene."

Around 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, police were called to investigate a suspicious package which had been discovered amid garbage and debris on 11th St. near Market St., just beyond the Mission District, San Francisco Police Department Officer Grace Gatpandan said.

They made the grisly discovery after breaking open the bloody cargo, which contained human body parts, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. After finding more remains at three other locations within a three-block radius two hours later, authorities expanded the crime scene to at least 11th and Howard streets.

"We do have people of interest that homicide investigators are speaking to," Gatpandan said, adding that police officers are searching for a suspect while detectives are reviewing surveillance camera footage from nearby businesses. However she declined to identify the suspect.

Following the discovery, four blocks were closed off to pedestrians and cars in order to carry out an investigation.

The up-and-coming area where the suitcase was found, home to a number of tech companies, has been plagued by a large homeless population, USA Today reported.

Meanwhile there have been no updates, a police spokeswoman told CNN.
