In another one for the "what's old is new" file, Atari is rebooting the venerable "Asteroids" franchise that began all the way back in 1979.

This new Asteroids title is called "Asteroids: Outpost," and the company has described it as "an open world sandbox survival game," according to a report at Destructiod.

In this game, you'll take on the role of a deep space miner, who stalks out the land to protect it from other players, and attempts to gain control of more land in search of more resources. Sounds a good deal like a hybrid of the original game and the excellent "Red Faction" series by Volition...which could be rather interesting if done right.

The announcement stated that crafting, customization and equipment will be very important to the game. Salty Studios, the developers, have stated that the game should hit Steam Early Access as soon as March.

In the screenshots released for the game (below), it's easy to compare the game's overall design aesthetic to Activision/Bungie's "Destiny."
