Washington Redskins third-down and backup running back Roy Helu signed with the Oakland Raiders in free agency, meaning the Skins are without a pass-catching back to complement starter Alfred Morris.

Thus far, the Redskins have avoided any splashy, overpriced signings that fans have become so used to loathing in the recent past. But will they dip their toes into the free agent market for a new backup RB? Rich Tandler of CSNWashington.com believes the answer is already on the roster in second-year back Silas Redd.

"The coaches like his work ethic and his ability," Tandler wrote. "Redd, who made the team as a rookie free agent last year, displayed a good aptitude for catching the ball out of the backfield.

"But can he pass block well enough to nail down the role?"

2013 fifth-rounder Chris Thompson could compete for that spot as well. But if new general manager Scot McCloughan was inclined to look at the free agent market, Pierre Thomas would be a logical replacement. Thomas recorded six seasons with at least 30 receptions during his eight years with the New Orleans Saints. During that time, he also proved to be a capable backup running back, averaging 4.6 yards per carry for his career.

One last option is for Washington to use the 38th pick in the NFL draft on a running back.
