Two men disguised as women tried ramming through a gate at the National Security Agency in Maryland on Monday morning, resulting in a shootout that reportedly left one of the suspects dead.

Driving a stolen Ford Escape, the two assailants tried using their vehicle to "penetrate" a checkpoint gate at the NSA facility at Fort Meade, according to ABC News.

NSA police open fired on the men, described to be "dressed as females." One of them was killed at the scene and the other suffered life-threatening injuries, officials said. Their names were not immediately released.

A motive for their alleged cross-dressing break-in attempt is not yet clear. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said the threat has been eliminated and an investigation is underway.

"The shooting scene is contained and we do not believe it is related to terrorism," the FBI's office in Baltimore, which is not far from Fort Meade, said according to NBC News. "We are working with the US Attorney's Office in Maryland to determine if federal charges are warranted."
