It's no secret the Dallas Cowboys could use an infusion of talent at the cornerback position.

Orlando Scandrick was able to fashion himself into a consistently quality starter last year, but Brandon Carr has been an expensive disappointment and Morris Claiborne barely moves the needle for Boys fans, and seemingly, coaches, at this point.

Were it not for his high draft pedigree, he'd likely already be gone.

Will the looming 2015 NFL Draft see a top corner prospect or two added to Dallas' currently thin stable of outside defenders despite glaring needs elsewhere?

"I'm told Marcus Peters/Washington or Kevin Johnson/Wake Forest may be to good to pass up if either are available for the Cowboys in round 1," Tony Pauline of Draft Insider reported Sunday.

It has long been assumed that the Cowboys, after losing DeMarco Murray in free agency, would target one of the 2015 NFL Draft's top two running backs later this week - Georgia's Todd Gurley and Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon - if they weren't able to land a veteran - Adrian Peterson, ahem ahem - prior.

It now seems that at least two of those options are off the table - Gurley is likely to go within the top-10 of the draft and the Cowboys have reportedly had little-to-no contact with the Vikings regarding Peterson.

While that would seemingly make Gordon the target at No. 27 - assuming he lasts that long - if Pauline's report is accurate Jones and the Cowboys could target defense early and make a move for a running back in the later rounds - luckily for Jones and the rest of the Boys' brass the draft is said to be quite deep at the position.

Cornerback, on the other hand, isn't.

Johnson and Peters are likely to join Trae Waynes and LSU's Jalen Collins - despite the recent report of failed drug tests during college - as first-round corners. Beyond that, beauty seems to be very much in the eye of the beholder, with plenty of options, but little consensus.

For the Cowboys, Peters and Johnson would provide an immediate upgrade over what they already have in-house.

Johnson, 6-foot, 188-pounds, has increasingly capable man cover skills, elite athleticism and an extremely competitive spirit. He also provides impact as a special teamer.

Peters, 6-foot, 197-pounds, may be the best cover corner in the draft. Due to off-the-field and coachability concerns, the top-10 talent is very likely to be available to the Cowboys later in the first-round.

Will his raw skills prove enticing enough for Jones and the Cowboys?

Time will tell, but Dallas better be certain they've found a sure-fire top-notch starter at corner if they're going to bypass such a glaring need at the running back position in the first-round.
