A human trafficking ring in the northern city of Cucuta, Columbia, was dismantled Thursday with five suspects arrested, including a doctor and two nurses.

"They are suspected of belonging to a criminal network that trafficked newborn babies and performed illegal abortions," police said according to MSN News.

Yahoo! News reported that a doctor's office and a clinic in Cucuta had been investigated since 2013 where abortions were performed costing 450,000 to 600,000 pesos (about $180 to $240) per operation, for women who are less than four months pregnant.

Meanwhile, five million pesos ($2000) is the cost of a baby when sold, according to NDTV. Birth certificates were also falsified in the said office.

The police said that buyers would also face charges.

Abortion is legal in Columbia since 2006 for special cases like rape victims, risk to the life or health of the mother, or severe fetal impairment.
