The continuing hunt for the two convicts who escaped from a maximum security prison in New York has now expanded to Vermont. The escapees, Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, have now been on the run for five days, setting a record for the longest jailbreak in New York history.
The convicted escapees were able to escape from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., after cutting through steel walls using power tools, squeezing through a steam pipe, and eventually popping out of a manhole, according to Reuters.
The manhunt that ensued after the prison break was uncovered has been massive, with more than 450 state, federal, and local law enforcement participating in the search. A $100,000 reward has also been offered by the state for anyone who can aid in the recapture of the pair, according to CNN.
New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico has stated that the officers have been searching "behind every tree, under every rock and inside every structure" for the two fugitives, reported CNN.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo described the situation and the decision to expand the search to nearby Vermont in a news conference.
"We have information that would suggest that Vermont was discussed as a possible location," he said.
"If they are headed toward Vermont ...Vermont is engaged and Vermont is mobilized and we are working hand in glove, and we will be coordinating several times a day to make sure every lead we have, every piece of information is shared," he added.
Under the agreement with Vermont, New York law enforcement officials will be allowed access across state lines, if the need arises.
