The Brookfield Zoo announced Tuesday that it has fired one of its employees because of a racist comment she made on Instagram.
Rochelle Latrice Robinson, a former employee at the Chicago zoo, posted a selfie on her Instagram while having a day off from work. Wearing her green zoo uniform, the 22-year-old captioned it with "Whassup, y'all? At work serving these rude ass white people." She tagged her employer, the Brookfield Zoo, in her public post.
Robinson's casual statement of annoyance at "rude ass white people" caused outrage to the zoo's patrons, Inquisitr reported.
Many expressed their anger and called for Robinson's termination on the Brookfield Zoo Facebook page. But others also came to defend her.
The Brookfield Zoo addressed the issue in a public statement on Facebook on Tuesday, according to Chicago Tribune.
"Yesterday, we became aware of the actions of a single employee which we agree are unacceptable," the zoo wrote. "This employee's statements in social media are in violation of our policies and do not reflect our institution's values. We have zero tolerance for these kinds of divisive behaviors. We treat all employment matters confidentially but please know that we took prompt action to remedy the situation."
