A teenage girl suffered lacerations on her leg after a shark attacked her and her Boogie Board near Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., on Thursday, according to the mayor, reported ABC News.
Mayor Debbie Smith said that a shark reportedly attacked the 13-year-old around 12:40 p.m. The shark bit off part of her Boogie Board and injured the girl in the attack, which took place near Monroe Street in Ocean Isle Beach. Furthermore, Smith said the girl was not seriously injured and had only suffered minor cuts on her foot, according to ABC affiliate WWAY.
"She wobbled out and left the Boogie Board and it just went at the Boogie [Board]," said Alexa Whittemore, who witnessed the attack. "I felt like I needed to warn people, but it was surreal. Like, it was definitely surreal, and I was like, 'Oh my gosh! I just hope she has her legs.' Like, I felt so bad for her cause she was so young."
According to the 911 emergency call, the shark bit the girl's right foot. "It got a hold of her foot and bit her board in half," the caller said. The shark was reportedly about four feet in length.
Earlier this week, a bull shark attacked a 10-year-old boy while he was playing in the shallow water in Cocoa Beach, Fla. The boy, who suffered more serious injuries than those reported in the North Carolina shark attack, was airlifted to an Orlando hospital, according to Inquisitr.
