Cicadas were not to Kansas City television station KNST reporter Katya Leick’s liking when she was only trying to do her job.
“Events will continue for the rest of the week here at Fort Riley with sporting events, at Fort Riley Katya Leick,” Leick was finally able to say after several unsuccessful attempts due to the flying insects' violation of journalism ethics.
The cicadas came buzzing from what appears to be a tanker at the U.S. Army’s installation site in Topeka, Kansas before Leick could even utter a word after she did a broadcast TV reporter’s standard 1, 2, 3 countdown while filming a segment for an upcoming news piece.
“Sporting activities start, ok I’ve got to stop flicking them,” Leick said a few times into her misery before the insects forced her to drop her microphone on the machinery. She just about give up on the task at hand saying “Ok, nope, not doing it.”
Leick maintains her composure, however, and hums to get herself back on track as she continues to shoo away the airborne critters and verbally express her frustration. She is finally able to get her words out, making for a happy ending to her debacle.
Leick played forward for the Kansas State University women's basketball team, according to kstatesports.com.
