The two inmates who broke out of a maximum-security prison in upstate New York last week are still on the run, but authorities are getting more clues as to how they pulled the escape off.
Richard Matt and David Sweat most likely had help from the inside, according to CNN.
A source told CNN that Joyce Mitchell, an employee of Clinton Correctional Facility, provided the inmates with hacksaw blades, drill bits and the two pairs of "special glasses," most likely for safety while using the equipment. The source went as far to say that Mitchell's cell phone was used to make calls to "people connected to Matt." However, it's not yet known if Mitchell actually made the calls or someone else did.
The Clinton Correctional Facility employee has denied rumors that she was in love with Matt, but did say he made her feel "special." Still, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie is skeptical.
"I don't believe that the information was that there was absolutely no relationship," Wylie said, referencing a complaint the New York State Department of Corrections once received about Mitchell's close friendship with Matt.
Wylie told CNN that Mitchell will "eventually" face charges, potentially being an accessory to the escape and providing contraband. She has helped authorities since the escape though.
"She has been extremely cooperative," Wylie said. "She continues to provide us with information critical to the case."
Mitchell's name was first brought up in connection with the prison escape on Wednesday by New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico, who said she "provided some form of equipment or tools" to Matt and Sweat. D'Amico added that Mitchell became friends with both men and "may have had some sort of role in assisting them."
The inmates broke out of the prison in the early hours of Saturday, June 6. They have not been seen since, according to ABC News. Both are convicted murderers.
