Crystal Reed, who plays the title character's first love in the hit MTV series "Teen Wolf," knows a thing or two about canines. But it's Oscar, her rescue pet, that's top dog in her world.
In an exclusive interview with Headlines & Global News, the actress reveals that Oscar, whom she calls a "gentleman," comes to the "Teen Wolf" set every day and has a penchant for a favorite food that might surprise you.
"Teen Wolf," loosely based on the 1985 film of the same name, debuted in 2011 and follows the travails of high school student Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), who is bitten by a werewolf – a life-changing event that turns him into one of the shape-shifting monsters himself. McCall falls for pretty new classmate Allison Argent (Reed), but there's a major complication: she comes from a family of werewolf hunters.
Before landing the role of Allison, which has lead to multiple Teen Choice Awards nominations, Reed had acted in guest roles on TV shows like "CSI," "CSI: NY" and "Rizzoli & Isles." She's also graced the big screen in films including "Skyline" and "Crazy Stupid Love."
"Teen Wolf" returns with a two-part Season 5 premiere on Monday, June 29 at 10 p.m. EDT and Tuesday, June 30, at 9 p.m. EDT.
Tell me about Oscar, his story how he came into your life?
I adopted Oscar from a no-kill shelter in Chicago called PAWS. I wasn't even looking for a dog at the time but saw him as I was strolling by; I could not resist and could not deny his charm. I was hooked.
What does he do to make you smile?
When Oscar and I are walking and he is off leash, he is always a few feet ahead of me and he will stop and look back every few minutes to check on me to make sure I'm there and OK. What a gentleman!
What are some of his favorite things?
Oscar loves veggies! Carrots and broccoli are his favorites. He's a pretty healthy dog.
What made you want to rescue?
To me, it seems like the only thing to do and the right thing to do. So many dogs are put down every minute because they don't have homes. [Rescuing] really is the right choice.
Do you ever take Oscar to work with you?
Oscar came to set with me every day on "Teen Wolf!" At first he was a little unsure about my trailer, but I got him a special bed and made it really comfy for him. He got really adjusted. He was also a featured extra on one episode! He did great.
What have you learned from having Oscar or pets in your life?
I've learned that canines are incredibly intuitive...more so than we give them credit for.
What does Oscar really mean to you?
Oscar and I have been through a lot together. Cross-country moves, breakups, letdowns.... He's been a constant in my life, and it feels good to know that he loves me unconditionally.
