‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Casts Martin Henderson – Fills Void Left By Patrick Dempsey’s Departure

Martin Henderson is returning to Shondaland.

Henderson will join "Grey's Anatomy" next season, filling the void left by Patrick Dempsey, according to Deadline. The ABC series killed of Dempsey's character, Derek Shepherd, near the end of last season.

The 40-year-old Australian actor will play a surgeon, but no other details on his character are known at this time. He previously starred in the Shonda Rhimes series, "Off the Map," in 2011 and in her 2009 pilot, "Inside the Box."

Henderson recently starred in the Australian version of "Secrets & Lies," which ABC remade this spring, and "The Red Road" on Sundance Channel. He will next appear in the film "Everest," alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin. The movie hits theaters on Sept. 18.

"Grey's Anatomy" also promoted Jason George to series regular and cast Joe Adler to play a new intern at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Season 12 will premiere on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
