The Sacramento Kings reportedly are still eying a trade for Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson. Kings coach George Karl plans to "make a play" for Lawson in the offseason, according to Gery Woelfel of the Milwaukee Journal Times.
Lawson has been linked to Sacramento ever since the Kings hired Karl in February, and according to Woelfel, Karl plans to try to pry Lawson from Denver this summer.
"Rumors persist Sacramento coach George Karl will make a play for Ty Lawson, who played for Karl in Denver," Woelfel wrote Friday.
Zach Lowe of Grantland and Howard Beck of Bleacher Report both indicated in February the Kings were interested in acquiring Lawson, with Beck saying Karl "would love to acquire Ty Lawson - if the rebuilding Nuggets were to make him available" in the offseason.
The good news for Sacramento is all signs point to Denver as being willing to trade Lawson. Nuggets president Josh Kroenke indicated he would do whatever it took to improve the team and didn't rule out moving any player on the roster.
If the Kings wanted to make a splash, they could - it's just a matter of how much they're willing to give up for the remaining two years of Lawson's contract. Sacramento has the No. 6 pick of the upcoming draft, and it'll have its 2016 first-rounder if it falls in the top 10. For contracts, Sacramento has Jason Thompson's expiring contract - the 2016-17 season is nonguaranteed - worth $6.4 million. They also have Darren Collison as an option to sweeten the pot, if necessary.
Sacramento's biggest competition for Lawson reportedly is the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas and Lawson are believed to have a strong mutual interest in each other.
