An armed civilian is now in critical condition after he was shot by guards outside the premises of Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas.
The injured man, whose name has not been released by authorities, had been driving his SUV when he hit a curb and signage near the main gate of the military base. He was holding a shotgun but it is still uncertain whether he exchanged shots or even words with the guards, according to the Associated Press via ABC News.
Another civilian was wounded and is also being treated at a hospital, the publication added.
Airbase officers and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are now investigating the case and what was the motive of the armed man. The military facility went into lockdown for nearly three hours after the incident on Monday.
The man's SUV with its doors widely open was closely checked and monitored by bomb experts during the lockdown.
Col. Charles Brown Jr., commander of the 19th Airlift Wing at the base, said the two guards reacted according to protocol upon seeing that the man was armed and could be a threat to the base's safety.
The base has more than 8,000 active duty military and civilian members, according to Reuters.
Photos of a man wearing a bomb protection suit at the entrance and near the SUV have been linked to the suspect, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.
