Dave Grohl kept rockin' when he fell off the stage in Sweden last week, but a broken leg will keep him from touring in the near future.
The Foo Fighters frontman suffered a broken fibula during their performance at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden on June 12. The injury has caused the band to cancel the rest of its European tour.
Grohl underwent surgery on Monday in London and had six metal screws inserted into his leg. Doctors have advised him to keep his leg elevated, forcing him to cancel gigs at the Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands, a concert in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and the Glastonbury Festival, one of the largest festivals in the world.
"My doctors have advised me to lay low for a while," the 46-year-old rocker wrote on the band's website. "The most important thing now is for me to recover from the surgery... I'm not out of the woods yet, folks."
He continued, "It kills me to say it, the doctors have told us to cancel shows. I'm really so sorry, guys. You know I hate to do it, but I'm afraid it's just not physically possible for me at the moment. We're doing our best right now to work out a plan, so bear with us."
The injury occurred when Grohl tried to entertain a few close fans, but ended up falling nearly 12 feet off the side of the stage. In addition to his broken leg, he also dislocated his ankle, which he had popped back into place off stage.
While he waited for a cast to come, the former Nirvana member had an EMT hold his leg in place while he rejoined the band on stage. He then took another short break to put the cast on and finished the concert, shifting between sitting down and standing with crutches.
"As I lay there on my back, I just thought, "Are you kidding me? We haven't even gotten to the screamy bit of the song and the gig is fucking OVER?" he recounted.
The Foo Fighters are scheduled to kick off the American leg of their summer tour on July 4 at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. That tour continues through October, but the band has not released info on the status of those concerts.
"After undergoing surgery Monday, Dave's full recuperation time is still to be determined," the band's PR firm said in a statement (via CNN).
